Review:
So first things first, when I picked up this book I didn’t realize that it was the second in the series. I should have checked on that before I requested it. I have not read the first book of the series and that put me at a disadvantage while reading this book. We are thrown into the action from the beginning, I assume pretty much where the first book left off. Eventually most of the questions that were floating around in my head while reading were answered it just took a while to get there. So occasionally I was a bit lost. I almost threw in the towel, but I kept with it. Am I glad I did, eh the jury is still kind of out.
The story was interesting. The bad guys are the “Wizards”, and honestly I would have picked a scarier name for the bad guys because they are real bastards and the name Wizard just doesn’t instill much fear. I keep visualizing Mickey Mouse in Fantasia. LOL Basically the bad guys are killing off the vampires, opening their chests and eating their hearts to steal the vampire’s powers. Kinda gross huh? Anton is the only “good” wizard among his people. His father is the Master Wizard and did a real head case on Anton, but despite that Anton managed to turn out good.
When we meet Anton (At least in this book) he is watching over Tyra who is in a healing coma. At some point in the first book he had fallen in love with Tyra from a distance, which kind of freaks out Tyra. Anton is a real sweetheart and puts up with a whole bunch of *hit from Tyra and her family. He puts his life on the line for Tyra and the vampires several times and is treated with disgust from most. Whereas he is a total sweetheart, he’s not much of a badass. He is definitely not the Alpha in this relationship. He’s more of a gentle soul, which is ok, I just happen to prefer more of a badass in my hero. At least he’s not a whiner. He definitely takes his licks and keeps on trucking which is admirable, but he is a crier! LOL. I think we get at least two cries out of him. Even though Anton is a sweetpea, he does have some issues. He was raised by evil after all. However, of the two, I want to cancel my subscription to Tyra’s issues…
Tyra, she is a warrior. She has been fighting the good fight for over a century. Her brother is the new king and she is a half-breed vampire/human mix. Because of her Halfling status she has always felt a bit out of step with the rest of the vampires so she made sure to be the best warrior that she could be. She is one of the strongest vampires in existence and has more than one power which is basically unheard of among vampire kind, which has brought her to the attention of the wizards. In the first book, Anton is dispatched to capture Tyra, but he can’t do it. Instead he ends up watching out for her, Tyra reacts to Anton with distrust for much of the book. She is strongly attracted to Anton, but she fears the attraction and can’t trust her instincts regarding Anton. She can’t reconcile that a Wizard could be more than evil. On one hand I liked that Tyra is a badass and a warrior, but for some reason I just never connected with her. Something was holding me back. I can’t quite put my finger on it. I am sure many readers will like Tyra; she has the qualities of a good heroine.
The different plot lines and POV’s kind of reminded me of a J.R. Ward Black Dagger book. There are rotating POV’s with a few plot lines interwoven. I was most intrigued by the little fierce human (I can’t remember her name) we get peeks at a fierce, troubled, young woman. I may even continue this series to find out what happens to her. We also follow the king and his duties as king. As well as I think his name was Xander a vampire who recently lost his mate who is now taking care of a woman who also lost her mate and has a newborn to care for. His story is touching and you can feel his pain as he tries to deal with the death of his mate. We also get a peek of the resident tattoo artist, we don’t follow him, but I wanted too! I do enjoy me a tattoo artist, especially a bad boy one!
Overall, the book was good. It wasn’t great, but it had its moments and some interesting characters. I would highly recommend reading the first book before picking up this book. This doesn’t seem like a series you can pick up out of order. I might have enjoyed the book more if I had all of the previous books details.
